Chatham
Chatham is actually two co-joined towns - Chatham Borough and Chatham Township - although they are often just referred to by their shared name of Chatham. Both are quiet picturesque residential communities 25 miles west of New York City, just over the southern border of Morris County, accessible via Exit 7 of Route 24. Chatham Borough is the smaller, at 2.4 square miles, with a 2000 population of 8,460. Chatham Township is 9.3 square miles with a population of 10,086. There is commuter train service to New York City via the Morris & Essex Train line of New Jersey Transit, as well as buses to Summit, Morristown, Newark and New York City, and close access to I-287 and I-78.
The lovely upscale neighborhoods are comprised of one-family dwellings, many in colonial or Victorian design, as well as townhouses, garden apartments and condominiums, while the downtown borough area offers many specialty shops. Two newspapers serve the communities, the Chatham Courier and the Independent Press. Chatham's regional school system ranks highly, with elementary schools, middle school and high school all within walking distance of nearly every home. The Library of the Chathams is a valuable resource, while nearby Drew University and Fairleigh Dickinson afford cultural programs, and the Chatham Community Players are an entertaining highlight.
The Chathams are located conveniently to many major corporations in the area, including AT&T, American Home Products, Atlantic Mutual, Lucent Technologies, Nabisco, Novartis, Prudential, Schering-Plough and Telcordia Technologies.
