BOROUGH of NEW PROVIDENCE

With land first purchased from Native Americans in 1644, New Providence was home to Puritans by 1720, who originally named it "Turkey" because of all the wild turkeys in the area. It is located in Union County on the Passaic River, in the Watchung Mountains, and bordering Morris County. It took the name of "New Providence" in 1759, when the balcony of the Presbyterian church, crowded with parishioners, collapsed, but no one was hurt, which was considered a miracle - a divine act of "providence." New Providence also included present-day Summit and Berkeley Heights; by 1899 all three were separate.

The Borough is 3.6 square miles, with a population of about 12,000 in 4400 households, 28 miles south of New York City. There are two train stations in the town, and proximity to I-78, the Garden State Parkway, and the New Jersey Turnpike. It is about 15 miles from Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Borough is an upscale residential community with mostly owner-occupied one family homes, with some garden apartments and condos. Most residents hold professional, managerial or executive positions. New Providence is home to corporate offices of C.R.Bard, Reed International, BOC Group, and Lucent Technologies.

The highly regarded school system has two public K-6 schools, (as well as one parochial elementary school), a middle school (grades 7-8), and New Providence High School, which has approximately 550 students and was recently ranked 7th overall of schools in New Jersey. Students in the District are known for academic achievements and excellence in athletics. New Providence Middle School was selected as a 2007 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School, one of only seven schools in New Jersey that has been named one of America's most successful schools.

The New Providence Memorial Library, opened in 1921, houses over 70,000 volumes of books and reference material in addition to over 120 different periodicals.

The New Providence Recreation Department has three playgrounds, an ice-skating rink, eight ball fields, and eight public tennis courts. Two pools, approximately Olympic size, are also available through the New Providence Community Pool Corporation.

The Borough also provides such amenities as a Senior Citizen Recreation Center, free rabies shots for pets every January, and is in the process of licensing an AM Radio Station to broadcast urgent and emergency messages to the area.

New Providence has its own website.

New Providence Public Schools also have a website, as does the Public Library.
