Springfield is an upper middle class residential suburban township of owner occupied one-family homes. Located in Union County, Springfield is in the metropolitan New York region, 23 miles southwest from the center of Manhattan. Springfield's population is about 14,250 residents on 5.06 square miles. NJ Transit has buses from Springfield into New York City's Port Authority. Springfield was first settled in the early 1700s, and during the Revolutionary War Washington had his General Headquarters in Springfield from June 7 to June 22, 1780. And if you've ever heard the historic saying, "Give Them Watts, Boys!", it was in Springfield that these words were first uttered. On June 23, 1780, "The Battle of Springfield" was fought. The British slowly pushed the Militia back to the second bridge over Van Winkles Brook on Morris Avenue, just west of the present day Mountain Avenue. During the heat of the battle, Reverend James Caldwell, Chaplain of Colonel Elias Daytons Regiment, whose wife had been murdered 16 days before, passed out Watts Hymnals from the Presbyterian Church (which still stands today) for use as wadding. His cry of Give Them Watts, Boys, has lived on the become a Motto of that conflict. The British goal of reaching Morristown was thwarted and the Battle of Springfield marked the last invasion of the British into New Jersey and removed the danger of final defeat of the Continental forces. Springfield enjoys all utilities and has excellent community services. Some of the town advantages include paid police and fire departments, 4 public schools, 2 pre-schools, 1 parochial school, a substantial library, many houses of worship, ample recreational facilities and easy access to highways and a variety of shopping centers and supermarkets. Springfield is proud to host one of the world's most famous golf courses, Baltusrol Golf Club, which has a hole considered the most challenging in the game. Springfield also has its own Website and you can browse the Springfield School Report Cards from the NJ Dept of Education. |
